Help for Colombia
Hilfswerk International promotes peacekeeping through the cooperation of peasants and the indigenous population
Peacekeeping requires a long breath. Through many years of experience in Colombia, we contribute to the peaceful coexistence between peasants and the Indigenous in the South of the country. Our sustainable help allows countless people and their families to live a dignified life in peace.
For more than 15 years, Hilfswerk International has been providing assistance in Colombia. We support families, children and women in the South of the country on their way to a better future through the long-term security of peace. The exchange of knowledge and experience between farmers and the indigenous population is a key element in achieving this goal.
Hilfswerk International cooperates closely with the Colombian population in the project region of Guaviare. Our goal is that the different populations - peasants and indigenous peoples - live peacefully in Colombia and learn from each other. A co-operation is particularly important because in our project region alone, five different indigenous groups live alongside and with peasants whose lifestyles could hardly be more different.
Our assistance in Colombia covers various areas, each of them with the aim to ensure peace in long term.
In the area of environmental protection, our assistance includes activating an environmental committee against deforestation and reconnaissance within the population.
The peasants and the indigenous population in Colombia have different agricultural systems. Hilfswerk International supports families through the integral development of agriculture and sustainable cultivation methods.
At the river basin in our project region there are various possibilities of fishing, which do not endanger the ecological balance. Indigenous knowledge about different species of fish is particularly useful. We mediate between the indigenous population and peasants to ensure a peaceful coexistence in this region in Colombia.
Hilfswerk International also helps in the urban regions of Colombia. Here, women, young people and people with disabilities are supported. Young adults have opened restaurants with the financial support of Hilfswerk International, which are now led by these young people on their own.
We promote local innovation and small businesses and support sustainable productions. The income-generating measures also include the support of 15 women's groups, which have trained themselves to operate fisheries. Hilfswerk International also helps the indigenous population to market their unique handicrafts.
In order to improve the living conditions of people in Colombia in the long term, a cooperation with all stakeholders is necessary – also at a political level. We organize meetings between political actors, indigenous peoples and the peasant population in order to ensure an exchange between all the parties.
